Inner Child Psychotherapy
Principles for inner child psychotherapy:
-
Does not work directly with original (historic) situation (healing occurs from working with inner child in the here-and-now)
-
The therapist does not address or speak directly to inner child (the client does that him or herself - as in Gestalt Therapy - the empty chair)
-
There is usually only one inner child at different ages and with different active themes - if there is complete separation between different parts of the personality or the client does not recognise adult mode processing, inner child psychotherapy is not appropriate at this stage - work with resourcing and creating a basic sense of safety.
-
Learning to identify child mode and adult mode and to activate adult mode processing is the goal of therapy
